Curriculum Design and Implementation at St. Margaret's

Our Vision

Loving to Learn; Learning with Love

As an ambitious church school, we aspire to instil a life-long love of learning in all members of our community, while creating a nurturing environment where everyone feels they truly belong.

We strive to accomplish this by providing an ambitious curriculum in a safe, stimulating and outstanding school environment where everyone can flourish, fulfilling Jesus' promise of 'life in all its fullness'.

We seek to imbue a sense of responsibility and empathy in our children, enabling them to become successful citizens of the future with a strong moral compass.

Our successes are built upon the foundation of our shared values and high expectations for all.

1 Corinthians 16:14 Do everything in love.

Our curriculum at St Margaret’s CE Primary follows an evidence-based approach and is designed to be implemented with pupil voice and meta-cognition at its heart.

We lay particular emphasis on teaching a wide range of knowledge and skills to prepare children for each transitional phase, including secondary education and their future role in society. Woven through our innovative and creative approach to learning, children receive focused teaching in our core areas:

Realising our vision: Curriculum Intent and Implementation

Our curriculum is ambitious and evidence-based:

Teaching, learning and the design of the curriculum at St Margaret’s CE Primary are grounded in consultation and research. Emphasis is on developing the teachers’ and teaching assistants’ professional practice to enable them to facilitate an evidence-based and holistic approach.

To achieve this all members of staff have access to evidence-based training designed by the Education Endowment Foundation’s (EEF) Research School network. In addition, we partner with other local schools and the Kyra Teaching Alliance to develop local networks. We are members of the ‘Small Schools’ network for English and Maths Hubs. Nearly half our teaching staff are also designated as ‘Evidence Leads of Education’ (ELEs) with Lincolnshire Research School to ensure our practice is immersed in evidence and research.

Our curriculum develops independent children who take responsibility for their learning:

National Curriculum expectations are the starting point for our curriculum but both teachers and pupils sit at the heart of our implementation and evaluation.  Our implementation allows pupil voice through a number of ways such as surveys and recordings of pupils talking about their work.

At our school, we aim to provide a rich and varied learning environment that allows all pupils to develop their skills, knowledge and abilities to their full potential including their meta-cognitive strategies that will serve them well beyond their time at our school.

Our curriculum facilitates children to have empathy for others and the world around them:

Our outdoor learning is award winning and fully integrated into the curriculum. It is also an area in which we can contribute to the wider environment through the submission of biological records.

Adopting a cognitive model of learning, breadth and progression is embedded in curriculum planning to ensure that challenge and high order thinking are integral to our classrooms. We believe that through the teacher’s facilitation, connections between subjects, knowledge and skills can grow, enabling all pupils to capitalise on an environment that generates freedom to learn.

Early Years:

Children in Early Years follow the Development Matters Curriculum working towards the Early Learning Goals.  In Reception, children are assessed using the Early Years Foundation Stage Profile.  In order for the school to gain a full and accurate picture of the children we encourage parents to share their knowledge of their child.  Children learn with enjoyment and challenge, both within the indoor and outdoor learning environment.  The Foundation Stage prepares children for learning in Key Stage 1 and begins to make links with the National Curriculum. As a school, we follow the Read, Write, Inc phonics programme.

For children in Years 1 – 6 we implement the National Curriculum Programmes of Study in both core and foundation subjects.  All our staff take a team responsibility for areas of the curriculum in ‘Curriculum Teams’ ensuring we utilise all our expertise.

Each Subject Progression Document will expand on our intent, implementation and impact.

Sports at St. Margaret's

Sport at St Margaret’s is a very important part of the curriculum. Despite the school’s small size, we successfully compete against much bigger schools within the JB Sports Inter-Schools Competitions.

In school, pupils have access to two PE sessions weekly which are delivered by specialist sports coaches from JB Sports. In addition, for two half terms a year, all children in our school have a weekly swimming and gymnastics lesson at the Meridian in Louth.

Every term, we offer at least two sports clubs after school, for example football, volleyball, tennis, golf, multi-skills, cricket and running.

We have also had the fantastic opportunity to offer enrichment activities. Here are some of our Year 5 children trying their hand at fencing!

Outdoor Learning

Outdoor Learning is very practical and delivered in a small group situation so that understanding can be monitored immediately and misconceptions dealt with. Mrs Chivers works closely with our Class Teachers to deliver objectives linked to the National Curriculum.

Music at St Margaret's

At St Margaret’s, we believe that as part of providing a high quality musical education, pupils must be provided the opportunity to be inspired by professional musicians in a wide range of musical genres.  As such, we provide numerous opportunities throughout the academic year for pupils to work with professional musicians to improve their own practice.
